This project aims to challenge the functionality and ornamentality of objects. Decoration has been viewed as useless since the rise of Modernism, however, why decorating can not be identified as a kind of functionality? And why pragmatism is deeply rooted in contemporary design discourse? To me, the decorative objects already perform a function: being decorations. I’m obsessed with collecting artifacts, ornaments and placing them on my shelf. I have never used the functionality the objects provide, to me, the vase doesn't have to place flowers inside, and a candle holder doesn't need a candle burning. Their functionality is decorating.

 

I built the replicas of my decorative collections based on their ornamentality and merged them into one entity to provide a so-called functionality as a shelf. The functionality of this shelf is built up by ornamentality.
